The Substance

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire examines the oppressive nature of female beauty as well as the perceived horrors of ageing. The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller stars Keira Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who opts for a break from writing about international wars to join a luxury cruise with a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her husband, and other filthy rich passengers. Yet once an unknown lady goes overboard overnight and the entire crew denies she ever existed, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Streaming currently, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills in this nifty paranormal narrative captured wholly through the eyes of the phantom. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the lens – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The daughter appears sensing the ghostly being, and the entity appears protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, the Sky channel

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his cult stardom in this self-referential adventure. He acts as a self-obsessed film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Hired by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has left the youth anxious. After Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and locked up in a basement, he anticipates a fatal end. But the old telephone on the wall repeatedly calls, with spooky callers providing assistance, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

This Dramatic Portrait

In the struggle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky true story about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple begin capitalizing on the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of tacky decor, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though the lead actress manages to present the real-life figure in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's another release from the filmmaker presents a intelligence thriller as sharp as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked to identify a traitor within their ranks out of five possibilities – one of whom is his own wife. Each performer are experts of understated style, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
