Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these treatments must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
